Soy Ana Lucía Del Solar, bióloga e ilustradora detrás de Ciencia Graficada.
Tengo un Bachillerato, Licenciatura y un Máster en Biología, con especialidad en Bioquímica y Biología Molecular. He trabajado como investigadora tanto en academia como en el sector privado, y a la par, he sido profesora universitaria de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular.
Ahora me dedico a la ilustración y comunicación científica.
¿Cómo surge Ciencia Graficada?
Siempre he pensado que la mejor forma de explicar temas científicos complejos es con la ayuda de gráficos e ilustraciones.
Ya sea como estudiante o docente, siempre invertía gran parte de mi tiempo haciendo una búsqueda exhaustiva del mejor gráfico o esquema que pudiera utilizar para transmitir la información de manera sencilla, didáctica y efectiva. Muchas veces, si no encontraba lo que buscaba, lo hacía yo misma. Mis amigos de la universidad probablemente me escucharon decir más de una vez, como bromeando: «algún día voy a hacer los gráficos para Nature Reviews«; pero ciertamente, nunca pensé que la carrera de ilustración científica como tal existía. ¿Necesitaba ser ilustradora? ¿diseñadora gráfica? He estudiado biología, no creía que se pueda…
Con los años noté la utilidad e importancia que tienen los gráficos, ilustraciones, e incluso cómics y caricaturas para poder simplificar conceptos. También me intrigó la capacidad que tienen los gráficos de poder llegar a diferentes tipos de público. Es así que comencé a aprender de ilustración, diseño gráfico y animación por mi cuenta, y decidí dedicarme por completo a la ilustración científica.
Y así como surge Ciencia Graficada, para ayudar a transmitir la información científica de manera gráfica y clara.
¿Por qué elegirme para tus ilustraciones científicas?
A diferencia de otros ilustradores o diseñadores gráficos, mi formación y experiencia me permiten evaluar, sintetizar y comunicar de manera efectiva temas científicos. Por este motivo, soy capaz de investigar y entender un tema a fondo, cosa que considero fundamental para la transmisión clara de conocimientos.
Un poco más de mi
La biología es muy amplia y abarca muchos temas interesantes. En mi caso, entender la regulación del metabolismo humano, así como el desarrollo de enfermedades metabólicas y la influencia del ritmo circadiano en estos procesos, son algunos de los temas que más me atraen y en los cuales he tenido experiencia haciendo investigación.
Desde hace algunos años me dedico, junto a mi esposo, a la divulgación científica en temas de nutrición y metabolismo en Nutmol (www.nutmol.com). Además de contribuir en el contenido, me encargo de los diseños y gráficos de nuestra página web, podcast y redes sociales.

Hello!
I’m Ana Lucía Del Solar, biologist and illustrator behind Ciencia Graficada (i.e. Graphed Science).
I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Biology, with specialization in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I have worked in academia and in the private sector as a researcher, while also working as a teacher in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for undergraduate students.
Currently, I’m a scientific illustrator and communicator.
How Ciencia Graficada came up?
I have always thought that the best way to explain and communicate complex scientific topics in a comprehensible way is through graphics.
During all the presentations that I had to do as part of my scientific career and also as a teacher, I spent a great amount of time searching for the best graph or scheme that could explain a topic in a simple, didactic, and effective way. Many times, when I could not find what I was looking for, I did it myself. My friends at the university would likely have heard me joking more than once: «one day I will do the graphics for Nature Reviews«; but in reality, I didn’t even know that Scientific Illustration could exist as a career. Did I need to be an illustrator? A graphic designer? I’m a biologist, I didn’t think it was possible…
As years went by, I noticed that graphics, illustrations, and even comics and cartoons are really important and useful in science for simplifying complex concepts. I was also intrigued by the way they enable to reach a broader audience, including people with different backgrounds. With that in mind, I started to learn illustration, graphic design and animation by myself, and decided to fully dedicate to scientific illustration and communication.
That is how Ciencia Graficada came to be, with the purpose of helping communicate science in a graphic and simple way.
Why choose me?
In contrast to other illustrators and graphic designers, my background and experience allow me to evaluate, synthesize and communicate science in an effective manner. Because of this, I’m able to research and understand a topic fully, something I consider fundamental for communicating science.
More about me
Biology is pretty diverse and full of interesting topics. My main scientific interests and the ones in which I have research experience are the regulation of human metabolism and the development of metabolic diseases, as well as the influence of circadian rhythms in those processes.
Since a few years ago, I work doing scientific communication in nutrition and metabolism in Spanish with my husband for Nutmol (www.nutmol.com). Besides contributing to the content, I’m in charge of the design and graphics for our web page, podcast and social media.
